The 12 Level 1 posts in Southern Railway are spread across six divisions: Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Salem. Each of these divisions will have two posts.
Note: All posts are open to candidates from all communities. There is no reservation for any specific community under this quota.
Eligibility Criteria
Before applying, make sure you meet all the eligibility conditions. The eligibility is divided into educational qualification, Scouts and Guides qualification, and age limit.
Educational Qualification
For Level 2 Posts:
- Passed 12th (+2 stage) from a recognized board with at least 50% marks in aggregate. The 50% mark requirement is not applicable to SC, ST, and Ex-servicemen candidates.
- OR Passed Matriculation from a recognized board plus Course Completed Act Apprenticeship for technician categories.
- OR Passed Matriculation from a recognized board plus ITI approved by NCVT for technician categories.
For Level 1 Posts:
- 10th pass OR ITI or equivalent OR National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT OR 10th pass plus NAC granted by NCVT OR 10th pass plus ITI.
Scouts and Guides Qualification
This is the most important part of the eligibility. You must satisfy all of the following conditions:
- You must be a President’s Scout / Guide / Rover / Ranger OR a Himalayan Wood Badge (HWB) holder in any section.
- You must have been an active member of a Scouts organization for the last 5 years. The active membership should be during 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26, and you should continue to be active during 2026-27.
- You must have attended two events at National Level OR All Indian Railway’s level AND two events at State Level.
The details of events attended must be enclosed as per Annexure-B. The Certificate of Activeness should be as per Annexure-A.
Age Limit
The age limit is calculated as on 01-01-2027. There is relaxation for OBC, SC, and ST candidates.

Additional Age Relaxation:
- Serving Railway employees with three years of continuous service and substitutes with three years of continuous service (or broken spells) can get relaxation up to 40 years for UR, 43 years for OBC, and 45 years for SC/ST.
Selection Process
The selection will be based on two main components: a written examination and marks obtained from certificates. The total marks for the selection process are 100.
Written Test / Hybrid (CBT-cum-Physical) Exam – 60 Marks
- The exam will consist of 40 objective questions (40 marks) and 1 essay-type question (20 marks).
- The questions will cover Scouts and Guides organization, its activities, and General Knowledge.
- The duration of the exam is 1 hour.
- There will be negative marking. For every wrong answer in the objective test, 1/3rd of the marks allotted for that question will be deducted.
Minimum Qualifying Marks:
- For Level 2 posts: UR – 40%, OBC/SC – 30%, ST – 25%.
- For Level 1 posts: UR – 40%, OBC/SC/ST – 30%.

Note: The first two certificates for National and State events are considered as minimum eligibility qualification and carry nil marks. Additional events fetch marks as per the notification.

Refund: Rs. 400 will be refunded to general category candidates who are found eligible and actually appear in the written exam. Rs. 250 will be refunded to concession category candidates who are found eligible and appear in the exam. The refund will be made after deducting bank charges.
